QUESTIONNAIRE:
What ignited the spark of your passion?
J: I've always loved music and everything it has made me feel. Going to concerts at a young age sparked my interest in performances and wanting to be involved in the music industry!
What was your upbringing like?
J: Just like starting any new journey it can be super challenging. I was blessed enough that my upbringing has been mainly positive. I've been able to gain lots of support from my city. The people who have been to my sets and who have connected with me online continue to support me to this day.
How did you equip yourself and what methods did you employ in your journey as a DJ?
J: I never really really felt equipped to DJ. I always knew I was a creative so when I found an interest in DJing it sparked me to want to learn more and more, whether that was from people around me or online. I took one DJ lesson in person that was recommended to me when I was in college and took those tools to see what I could create. The rest was history!
How do you manage to create a balance between your personal life and professional commitments, all while nurturing the same passion and dedication you have for DJing?
J: To be completely truthful I don't think I've ever I figured out how to manage my personal life and the professional commitments. It can be hard not to make your business life your entire identity. I'm still trying to figure out how to find that balance. I've been struggling with that these days but feel like everything is meant to happen in due time. Perhaps right now I'm not meant to find that balance just yet but I know that it will all click someday!
What do you believe sets you apart from other aspiring DJs?
J: Every DJ has their own style, their own flare, their own personality that shines. I never steer away from being myself, whether that's online or in person. I think that's something that sets me apart from a lot of other DJs. I also never have a problem with playing the music that some people may be scared to play. As much as you are playing for certain the crown in certain scenarios, it's okay for you to also play for you!
Have you had any relevant experiences or internships that have shaped your understanding of the music industry?
J: Back in college I used to intern at this place called Brooklyn Bowl located at The Linq in Las Vegas. Woking there has helped me in several different ways. It taught me structure as far as marketing, being in the music industry, and allowing my creativity to flow. I interned there for a year and loved every single moment. I still stay in touch with my old managers from there!
What is your #1 goal to accomplish within your profession?
J: My #1 goal to accomplish within my profession would be to inspire and live the life I truly deserve. I want to live a FULL life. I want more out of my life and hope that my profession can bring me as many amazing experiences as it possibly can!
What is one piece of advice you wished you had when first started?
J: Fail faster and learn as much as you can throughout those lessons. Don't get so caught up in the future and enjoy every obstacle of your journey. Although my job is fun, it comes with a lot that can take a toll on your mental. I think if someone told me to take my time and embrace the good, ugly, of all of it, I would have lost a lot of expectations with a lot of experiences I've had.
What insights can you share from your experience in the music industry?
J: The music industry is really in all who you know. Move intentionally and make as many connections as you possibly can. I can say that a lot of my success has come from the support of people who have also opened many doors for me!
